In French, we create conditional sentences, using the conjunction SI.

Then there are different possibilities of meaning when we use SI in a sentence. It can express:

 

1. PROBABILITY OR NEAR CERTAINTY

Si + Indicatif présent + Futur simple

Si demain il fait beau, j'irai me promener.	If the weather is nice tomorrow, I'll go for a walk.
Si tu pars, je viendrai avec toi.	If you go, I'll come with you.
Tu seras en retard à l'école, si tu ne te lèves pas tout de suite.	You'll be late for school, if you don't get up right away.
Si tu n'aimes pas ton cadeau, je t'offrirai autre chose.	If you don't like your gift, I'll get you something else.

 

2. CAUSE AND EFFECT

Si + Indicatif présent + Indicatif présent

S'il veut, il peut venir avec nous.	If he wants, he can come with us.
Au Japon, si tu touches un article, tu le paies.	In Japan, if you touch an item, you pay for it.
Si tu ne veux pas attirer l'attention sur toi, tu évites l'extravagance.	If you don't want to draw attention to yourself, you avoid extravagance.
Si je ne prends pas mes antidépresseurs, je ne me sens pas bien.	If I don't take my antidepressants, I don't feel well.

 

3. CONDITIONAL ORDER

Si + Indicatif présent + Impératif présent

Si tu sors te promener, emmène le chien avec toi  !	If you go out for a walk, take the dog with you!
Si tu vas faire les courses, achète-moi des cotons-tiges  !	If you're going shopping, buy me cotton swabs!
S'il n'y a plus d'eau chaude, lave-toi à l'eau froide  !	If there's no hot water, wash with cold water!
Si tu t'en vas, ferme la porte derrière toi  !	If you're leaving, close the door behind you!

 

4. HYPOTHESIS

Si + Imparfait + Conditionnel présent

Si je gagnais au loto, je partirais faire le tour du monde.	If I won the lottery, I would take a trip around the world.
Si elle était plus grande, elle pourrait être une top modèle.	If she was taller, she could be a top model.
S'il faisait plus chaud, on ne serait pas obligés de chauffer la maison.	If it were warmer, we wouldn't have to heat the house.
Si les huîtres n'étaient pas aussi chères, j'en mangerais tous les jours.	If oysters weren't so expensive, I would eat them every day.

 

5. ASSUMPTION NOT REALIZED IN THE PAST

Having consequences in the Present

Si + Plus-que-parfait + Conditionnel présent

Si j'avais épousé Marc, je serais riche aujourd'hui.	If I had married Marc, I would be rich today.
Si je ne m'avais pas rasé la tête l'année dernière, j'aurais les cheveux longs aujourd'hui.	If I hadn't shaved my head last year, I would have long hair today.
J'aurais toujours un travail, si tu ne m'avais pas conseillé de démissionner.	I would still have a job, if you hadn't advised me to quit.
S'il n'était pas mort étant enfant, il aurait trente ans aujourd’hui.	If he hadn't died as a child, he would be thirty today.

Having had consequences in the Past

Si + Plus-que-parfait + Conditionnel passé

Si tu n'avais pas roulé si vite, nous n'aurions pas eu d'accident hier.	If you hadn't driven so fast, we wouldn't have had an accident.
Si j'avais mangé moins, je n'aurais pas grossi autant.	If I had eaten less, I wouldn't have gained so much weight.
Si tu ne m'avais pas aidé, je n'aurais jamais réussi ce projet.	If you hadn't helped me, I would never have succeeded in this project.
Si vous ne l'aviez pas secouru, il serait mort ce jour-là.	If you hadn't rescued him, he would have died.
